Got a boring inground or above ground pool in your yard? A lot of people have their own pool but aren’t sure how to decorate the space. If you leave this area undecorated, it can make your backyard look a little plain and uninspiring.
But how exactly do you decorate your pool deck? In this guide for pool deck decorating ideas, I’ve got some great articles to help you turn this area into the ultimate summer hang out spot. Check them out below:
Pool Deck Decorating Ideas
When you start to come up with pool decorating ideas that might work for your space, consider what type of pool you have:
- Inground pool
- Above ground pool
- Small or tiny pool
- Stock tank pool
- etc.
How you decorate your pool deck will depend a lot on the type of pool you have, how much space you have around the pool and your goals for the area.
Let’s look a few specific types of pools and the decor that works best for them.
Above Ground Pool Decorating
Have an above ground pool? You’re not alone! These types of pools are popular because they are often much cheaper than building out an inground pool.
Above ground pools also work well for certain situations where inground pools aren’t feasible.
The first thing to consider when decorating an above ground pool is whether or not it has a deck surrounding it.
If your above ground pool does have a deck or seating area against the edge, than you can almost consider it like an inground pool when it comes to decor.
If you above ground pool sits alone in the yard, don’t worry. There are still lots of great ways you can make your above ground pool look stylish instead of being an eyesore.

Inground Pool Decorating
Is your pool and inground pool? If so, chances are you already have a well defined pool deck or patio area surround the pool.
For many people, this space can be quite large as the pool is often level with the entire backyard. Other people might just have a small pool deck by their inground pool that will only fit a few chairs.
One of the things people often wonder about with inground pools is how to layout the furniture to maximize the space.
But decorating an inground pool is about more than just furniture. Consider lighting, landscaping, shade areas, etc.

Pool Entertainment Areas

In order to do this, you’ll need to consider how to setup your pool area for entertaining.
There’s lots of ways you can go about this from installing an outdoor kitchen space to having a fire pit or two on your pool deck, or creating a poolside games area.

Small Pool Decor IDeas
What if your pool is rather small? Can you still decorate a tiny pool deck?
Yes, I think so. In fact there are tons of great ideas on Pinterest and Instagram for creating a fun hang out space with tiny stock tank pools (which are basically about the size of two bath tubs put together!)
So if you can decorate around a stock tank pool, you can find ways to decorate small pool decks for standard inground pools too.
When your pool deck is small, it’s about making the best use of the space. What do you need there – furniture, an umbrella or shade cover, potted plants, etc.?

Pool Decor at Night
One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to sit outside in the evening when the sun has gone down and the weather starts to cool off.
If you have a backyard pool deck, this can be the perfect place to relax and enjoy a warm evening.
But in order to make the most of your pool deck at night, you’ll need the right kind of lighting setup.
For pool decor ideas with lighting, you’ll want to consider:
- Underwater lights
- Path lights
- Landscape lights
- Floating lights
- Wall sconces
- String lights
- etc.
The pool above has some great underwater lighting, but could really benefit from some more lighting options to make the most of the space.
