Patio Lighting Ideas
One of the great things about nice weather in the summer is spending time outdoors, enjoying it! For many of us, that means getting out on the back patio or deck and taking in some fresh air.
It has taken me some time to create a backyard patio area that is not only functional, but looks inviting too.
One of the ways I turned my patio into a relaxing space was to include lighting. The warm glow of lights on a patio or deck really makes a big difference.
If you’re not sure what to do for outdoor lights, keep scrolling for some awesome patio lighting ideas that will transform your space into the ultimate hang out spot at night!
Patio Table Lighting
Do you have an outdoor table or dining area on your patio? If so, this is a great place to include some lighting options.
In the photo above, small hurricanes and candles are used to create an inviting glow on the table. Since this table also includes a patio umbrella, it could make use of an umbrella light.
Patio Umbrella Lights
These are disks lights that are mounted to the inside of your patio umbrella to provide light for your table. You can also find patio umbrellas with built in lights. These are a must have if you like to sit under your umbrella a lot in the summer evenings.
Lanterns For Patio Lighting
One of my favorite patio lighting ideas for cozy nights is to use outdoor lanterns. Outdoor lanterns are a great way to add both a decorative and functional touch to your patio space.
They are the perfect lighting option for small patios and decks, such as the apartment balcony area shown in the photo above.

If you’re concerned about having constantly light the candles in your lantern, not to worry. Simply use outdoor LED candles in your lantern. Most LED candles have remote control features or timer features that allow the candle to turn on and off automatically.
String Lights For Patios
String lights work really well to illuminate a patio space at night. This is because they can be spread across a wide area and cast the light in a downward direction.
You can also use string lights to highlight a certain space on your patio such as a wall or table area. In the photo above, string lights in a tree provide some light for the outdoor fireplace.
Outdoor String Lights
An umbrella light, lanterns with candles and patio table light would all be great additions to this backyard gravel patio.
Patio Coffee Table Lighting
Do you have a outdoor sofa and chairs on your patio? If so, you probably also have some sort of coffee table, end table or garden stool to use as a flat surface nearby.
These surfaces make the perfect areas on which to add some lighting to you patio. Much in the same way you would add candles, lanterns and trays to an indoor coffee table, the same concepts apply to lighting outdoor coffee tables as well.
I like the idea of keeping outdoor patio lighting on a coffee table simple and easy to move. This is especially important if you live in an area with bad weather.
Patio Lighting For Bar Areas
If you like to entertain, having a patio bar and kitchen area is a must. You can purchase premade, free standing outdoor bars for your patio. Or consider adding a more permanent bar structure such as the outdoor bar shown in the photo above.
Regardless of the type of bar you have on your patio, lighting can be added to this area to enhance the space. Soft LED strip lights under the bar counter give a beautiful glow and add visual interest.
String lights can be hung above a bar area for more lighting above. Also, consider using outdoor lanterns and candles on the surface of your bar for some extra illumination.
Patio Lighting For Hot Tub Areas
Hot tubs are fun to soak in during the evening hours, especially when the weather is slightly cool. If you have a nice hot tub area on your patio, or even a pool area, consider adding some fun lighting there for a nice vibe at night.
In the photo above, colorful string lights are used to illuminate the space. Many hot tubs and swimming pools feature underwater lights. These are a great safety feature at night, but they also create a soft glow in the space.
If you like to star gaze during your hot tub time, be sure to keep the lighting soft and aimed directly at the ground. Your eyes will be able to see more stars this way.

Patio Landscape Lighting
Many of us have patios that are surrounded by landscaping features such as retaining walls, gardens and trees. Creative backyard landscaping really comes to life when lit up at night.
To enhance your patio landscaping, there are a wide variety of lighting options you can use. Path lights are popular as they provide lighting close to the ground and help highlight many of the plants.
Outdoor Path Lights
If your patio landscaping is against a wall, consider using up lighting to project some additional light into the space. I also like string lights and rope lights to accent landscaping bordering a patio.
However you go about illuminating your landscape, be sure that it works with the rest of the lighting features on your patio. Too much light on a patio at night will prevent you from seeing out into your garden area.
Fireplace Patio Lighting
I love a patio with a nice outdoor fireplace. There’s something very stylish and cozy about the warm glow of logs from an outdoor fireplace.
While the outdoor fireplace will certainly provide some light on your patio, consider adding in other light sources as well. In the photo above, string lights on a pergola help add additional light in the patio space. Outdoor candles in lanterns would also work well for this lovely patio.

Patio Lighting With Fire Pits
Another one of my favorite patio lighting ideas is to use a fire pit. Fire pits are becoming more popular these days and for good reason. They are great for people that want the warm glow of a fireplace on their patio without the costs of building and maintaining one.
Fire pits come in all shapes and sizes. There are a different fuel sources available and you can style them in a variety of unique ways. For more information on using a fire pit on a patio, check out this article: Fun, Unique Patio Fire Pit Ideas You’ll Want to Try
A well placed fire pit will help illuminate your patio at night. But you might want to add in other lighting sources too. In the photo above, a glass lantern with candles is used next to a fire pit on a patio. Lighting from a wall sconce provides an additional glow in the background.
Lighting For Covered Patios
Do you have a covered patio or are thinking about installing one? If so, don’t forget to include some lighting into the roof area of your patio.
If you’re building a patio cover from scratch, adding in recessed lighting and lighting from a chandelier or ceiling fan is a great idea. This lighting is usually hardwired and accessed from a switch nearby your patio.
For those that already have a patio cover and don’t want to install hardwired lighting, look for more portable options. Hanging string lights along your patio cover is a good option. LED disk and strip lights can also work well here as they are not too heavy. Just be sure whatever you use is rated for the outdoors.
Lighting For Pergola Covered Patios
Many people think of using string lights to illuminate their pergola. This is a good option if you need a quick and easy lighting source for your pergola covered patio area.
But for those willing to spend a little bit more time working on the space, consider installing hardwired lighting in your pergola. In the photo above, wall mounted lighting fixtures give the pergola covered patio a nice bright glow at night.
For some people, this might be too much light, but if you’re looking to create an additional “room” on your patio, this might be a worthwhile option.
Lighting For Patio Walls
Do you have a wall or large fence against the sides of your patio? If so, consider adding lighting features against the wall. Walls provide a nice backdrop against which to project light upward. In the photo shown above, soft up lights create a warm glow against the patio’s wall.
Wall scones provide additional bi directional lighting. Finally, path lights are used to highlight other areas of the patio space. A gorgeous, professional looking patio area!
