Patio Fire Pit Ideas
There’s something about enjoying a warm fire in the evening that’s really fun and relaxing. I talked before about using outdoor fireplaces to create this experience.
But what if you don’t have the time, space or money for an outdoor fireplace on your patio?
In that case, a fire pit might be a better option. Fire pits come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, so you’re sure to find something that will work for your space and budget.
If you’re wanting to create a cozy patio vibe, keep scrolling to discover some creative ideas on how to use fire pits on your patio.
Fire Pits For Gravel Patios
Gravel patios are becoming more popular, and for good reason. They’re generally cheaper to install than concrete patios and are are nice DIY option.
If you have a gravel patio, consider adding a fire pit to the area to create a nice space to relax. In the photo above, a pretty fire bowl is surrounded by plants, patio furniture and trays of candles.
The fire pit doesn’t have to be the focal point of the seating area. It can be off to one side as more of a decoration if that’s what works best for your space.
Patio Fire Pit Furniture Ideas
But what if you do want to create a fire pit area that people can sit around and feel the warmth? There are lots of ways to arrange furniture around fire pits that make the fire pit the focal point.
Basic Adirondack chairs work well for these layouts, or even just regular patio lounge chairs. These fire pit area designs are good options if you want the flexibility of adding more seating if needed.
Outdoor Lounge Chairs
For those that aren’t going to be moving their patio fire pit around, consider getting comfortable outdoor couches and chairs for the space. I love the semi circular patio furniture shown in the photo above. This is one of my favorite fire pit patio ideas for those with round fire pits.
Patio Fire Pit Lights
Fire pits give off a fair amount of light just by themselves in the evening hours. If you want to really create a cozy patio area, consider adding a few more lighting options such as string lights, outdoor flameless candles, path lights and mounted lights to your backyard space.
Outdoor String Lights
This not only gives you a bit more safety in the dark, but by using a few different lighting sources, you can create a what looks like a professionally designed outdoor space.
In the photo above, string lights contribute to the overall lighting of this cute patio fire pit area in the fall.
Decks With Patio Fire Pit
What if your patio area features decking? Can you use a fire pit on a wood deck. Deck materials can be flammable, so you’ll want to be careful using fire pits on a deck.
It’s always a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher on hand when running your fire pit, regardless of where it is located in your backyard.
For those that want a warm glow but don’t want the risk of real flames, gas or smokeless fire pit are a good option. This article provides a nice overview of the different kinds of fire pits available and safety options to consider: What to Consider When Buying a Fire Pit: Ultimate Buyer’s Guide
Modern Patio Fire Pit
One nice thing about fire pits is that they come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and styles. You don’t have to use just a plain metal fire pit if you don’t want to.
If you’re into modern decor, a smooth, sleek fire pit might be the perfect touch to your outdoor patio. In the photo above, a black rectangular fire pit is paired with modern outdoor furniture for a stylish patio in the backyard of this desert home.
Small Patio With Fire Pit
If your patio is very limited in size, you can still use a fire pit in the space. For small patios, fire urns might be your best option. Fire urns feature a fuel source tucked into a urn like container.
Many fire urns are designed to be used in smaller spaces such as the corner of the patio. You can also find smaller fire bowls that might work for your space. Seating will be limited with these options, but they still provide a nice focal point for your patio area at night.
Outdoor Patio Gas Fire Pit
If you’re designing a patio area from scratch, consider installing a permanent gas fire pit. You can run a propane line to your fire pit or find a way to hide a propane tank to use as the fuel source.
In the patio above, beautiful tiles were used to cover this permanent gas fire pit. Simple patio chairs with cushions and colorful pillows are used to create a fun outdoor space. I love how the tile was also included on the wall to create a sense of cohesion with the colors and textures.
Sunken Fire Pit With Seating
What about creating a patio area with a sunken fire pit? This is a great option for those with a large backyard that want to do something fun with the space.
Sunken fire pits can be dug into the ground, or you can create an elevated decking platform around a sunken fire pit area. Either way, the fire pit remains slightly out of sight, for those that don’t like the look of fire pits but still want a fire pit in their space.
Circle Fire Pit Area
Another one of my favorite patio fire pit ideas is to create a circular patio in your backyard. In the center of the circle, place a large fire bowl, then add chairs and seating around the fire bowl.
Add in small end tables and you have the perfect hang out spot for summer gatherings. Additional seating can be added as needed for times when you have more guests.
I love in the photo above how white butterfly chairs are used to create an inexpensive but stylish look for this circle fire pit area.
Metal Fire Pit
I’ve mentioned several different styles of fire pits so far, but sometimes you just want something plain, simple and durable. In that case, one of my favorite simple backyard fire pit ideas is to use a basic metal fire pit.
Metal fire bowls are designed to look rustic and weathered. They can withstand the elements, so this might be a good option if you live in a colder climate. You can find basic shapes such as the one shown in the photo above. Or consider using a more stylish metal fire pit combining functionality with a unique design.
Fire Pit Pergola
Can you use a fire pit near a wood pergola? Yes, I think so, although caution should be used when burning wood near pergolas. Gas fire pits can be a good option for those with a pergola over their patio as there is no risk of flying embers.
In the photo above, a chiminea style outdoor fire pit is used to better contain the burning wood on this pergola covered patio. These cute chimney shaped fire pits add charm to your patio to create a cozy outdoor area.
Backyard Fire Pit Lounge Areas
If you’re looking to turn your patio into an amazing backyard lounge area, consider adding a fire pit to your design. The fire table shown in the photo above, provides a flat surface in this small backyard patio that is perfect setting down drinks and phones.
Lots of cushions and pillows create a relaxing vibe. A few string lights help provide extra light at night. Candles and lanterns would also work well here to add a bit more light to the space.
Elevated Patio Fire Pit
For those that don’t want to see their patio fire pit, one of my favorite patio fire pit ideas is to build an elevated platform around your fire bowl so that it appears to be hidden in the ground.
Add a few chairs and end tables to the elevated platform to create a fun, unique space in your backyard. If you’re designing a patio from scratch, this is something to consider as it gives a modern vibe to your home.
