Outdoor Kitchen Ideas
Are you looking to install a kitchen area in your backyard? It’s something I’ve always thought would be a great addition to a patio or deck area, although I’ve never lived in a house that had one.
Outdoor kitchens are especially great if you live in a sunny climate and like to cook.
If you’ve got your eye on installing a kitchen area in your backyard, keep scrolling for some outdoor kitchen ideas that will have you cooking outside in no time!
Backyard Bar And Grill
If you like to entertain, consider add a bar component to your outdoor kitchen. This might be as simple as having a few bar stools along one wall of your kitchen area.
Or it might mean having a standalone outdoor bar that complements your outdoor kitchen. Either way, this be a fun hang out spot in your backyard while you grill and serve drinks to guests.
Colorful Outdoor Kitchen
Many outdoor kitchens you’ll see involve using stone or brick in neutral colors. But if you’re wanting to add a pop of color to your backyard area, considering using bright colored tiles as the finish for your outdoor kitchen.
In the photo above, bright blue tiles really make this under deck patio kitchen come to life. A unique glass chandelier gives some light to the area and provides more color for the space.
Tiles might not be the best option for all climates, so be sure to do your research before installing tiles in an outdoor kitchen.
Brick Outdoor Kitchen
For those that are ok with using neutral colors and want a DIY outdoor kitchen option, installing a brick backyard kitchen might be the way to go. Bricks and paver stones are readily available at home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot.
Bricks are also a good option for those that live in colder climates and are concerned with the elements damaging their outdoor kitchen.
However, bricks and pavers can be quite heavy and thus your outdoor kitchen will need to have a solid foundation to support the weight. Outdoor Kitchen Lighting
Lighting options should be considered if you plan on spending time in your outdoor kitchen in the evenings. You’ll want to be able to see what you are cooking of course 🙂
But also, lighting adds a certain ambiance to an outdoor kitchen space. In the photo above, color changing LED lights set the mood for this outdoor kitchen on a covered patio. Light strips are placed under the countertops while overhead lighting in the vent illuminates the top surface areas.

Indoor Outdoor Kitchens
Indoor outdoor kitchens are a fun way to make the most of a patio space that is close to your house. These areas are perfect for those that live in warmer climates and want to spend time in the fresh air but with the comforts of inside.
In the photo above, a built in grill and bar are set against one wall of this covered patio. Pretty blue tiles along the backsplash coordinate with the blue chair cushions for a decorative look.
Outdoor Kitchen With Fireplace
One of my favorite outdoor kitchen ideas is to have an outdoor fireplace in the same space. This makes for the ultimate backyard hangout spot as you can cook meals, relax by the fire and just enjoy the fresh air.
If you’re doing a custom built outdoor kitchen that will feature brick or stone, it might be worth it to have your contractor build you an outdoor fireplace as well.

Outdoor Kitchen With A Pizza Oven
Pizza ovens are a popular feature of outdoor kitchens these days. Wood fired pizza is fun to make and provides a different food choice apart from grilled meats and veggies.
There are a few ways to incorporate pizza ovens into your outdoor kitchen. One way is to build one using brick and stone such as a what is shown in the photo above. You’ll want to make sure to ventilate the space properly and account for the weight of the structure.
Another way is to purchase a pizza oven appliance and have it sitting on a flat surface in your outdoor kitchen. Here is a good article discussing some of the pizza oven appliances available on the market today: Outdoor Pizza Oven: 7 Best Products of 2025 & Detailed Review
Small Outdoor Kitchens
It might seem like you need a bunch of space to install an outdoor kitchen in your backyard. But to be honest, if you have enough room for a grill, you can probably have a small outdoor kitchen in the same area.
In the photo above, a tight corner of the deck is transformed into a “U” shaped outdoor kitchen with a built in grill and side burner surrounded by counter space. The layout makes the most of the small area and is perfect for one person doing some grilling.
For outdoor kitchen ideas for small spaces, it’s best to take some measurements of the area and see what might work in your space before assuming that you don’t have enough room for a backyard kitchen.
Luxury Outdoor Kitchens
For those that do have a bunch of space and want to create more of an outdoor room complete with an outdoor kitchen and dining area, then installing a luxury outdoor kitchen might make sense.
Luxury outdoor kitchen feature high end outdoor appliances, beautiful cabinetry, strategic lighting & decorations along with marble and stone finishes.
They are usually designed by professional who can help you get the most out of your outdoor kitchen space, while creating a unique ambiance for your backyard.
If your home is on the higher end of the market, installing a luxury outdoor kitchen can add value while providing a great spot for entertaining guests.
Rustic Outdoor Kitchens
For those that want more of down to earth feel than luxury outdoor kitchens, consider taking a rustic approach to your backyard kitchen area.
Rustic outdoor kitchens often remind me of days spent at summer camp, where we relaxed on wood furniture and did our cooking over old stone grills.
The use of wood and stone give an outdoor kitchen more of a primitive, outdoorsy kind of vibe. Just because your outdoor kitchen is rustic, doesn’t mean it can’t have modern touches such as sinks, refrigerators and metal cabinets.
Outdoor Kitchen On Deck
Can you install an outdoor kitchen on a deck? Yes, absolutely you can do outdoor kitchen ideas on deck. You’ll want to make sure your deck is sturdy enough to handle the weight of the kitchen. Another concern is making sure that everything is properly vented to reduce the risk of fire.
But if your deck area can support an outdoor kitchen, it can make for a nice feature to have on a deck.
In the photo above, a simple line of cabinets with a grill and a sink create a nice outdoor deck kitchen against a wall. Creative lighting makes it a nice spot to cook and enjoy meals during the evening hours.
Outdoor Kitchen On A Patio
Many of us have basic patio areas in our backyards or right off of the house. It might seem like there isn’t enough space on your patio for an outdoor kitchen, but you would be surprised with what you can fit into the area.
In the photo above, an outdoor griddle is paired with a sink for a basic but cute outdoor kitchen on this small brick patio. A roof overhang helps provide shade and makes the space feel more like an outdoor room.
Outdoor Kitchen With A Sink
Does your outdoor kitchen have to have a sink? Definitely not, but it can be a nice feature to have, especially if you plan on doing a lot of outdoor cooking.
The under deck kitchen shown in the photo above features not only a sink, but a full dishwasher as well.
If your kitchen will have cabinets where you plan on storing plates and glasses, having an outside sink and dishwasher allows you to wash the dishes without having to go inside your house.
Outdoor Kitchen With Cabinets
If you live in a climate without a lot of rain or will have a fully covered outdoor kitchen, consider using wood cabinets for the space. Wood cabinets add a warm touch to your outdoor space and provide plenty of storage.
For those that are concerned about moisture in their outdoor kitchen, stainless steel cabinets are the way to go. You will still get storage space without having to worry about the elements ruining your backyard kitchen area.
