Decorating a front porch for Halloween is a great way to celebrate this spooky holiday. But how exactly to do it?

Front porches, steps and stairs leading up to a house can be tricky to decorate. There’s lots of different levels, focal points and empty spaces to consider.

Don’t let that stop you from creating an awesome scary, classy or cute setting on your front porch this year for Halloween.

Pumpkins for a Halloween Front Porch

Pumpkins lining one or both sides of a steps up to a front porch is a classic look for Halloween. You can do a whole bunch of pumpkins to make a statement, like the front steps in the photo above.

Or you can just have a few displayed here and there amongst other decor such as gourds, flowers, skeletons, crows, etc.

Have you tried painting pumpkins for Halloween? This is a great way to decorate pumpkins without having to carve them. I love the painted pumpkins in the photo above with an Alice in Wonderland theme – something different for Halloween front porch decorations.

One nice thing about pumpkins is that you can display them for both fall and Halloween. As October gets closer, add in some jack-o-lanterns and other Halloween decorations into your front porch display.

Now jack-o-lanterns can be fun to carve, but they can also be really messy and time consuming! A way around this is to use pre-made resin and plastic jack-o-lantern figurines. These will last you for years and can be a real time saver.

Don’t think your jack-o-lanterns have to be carved with the standard “face”. There’s lots of creative ways you can carve a jack-o-lantern these days. Check out Pinterest for some ideas.

Front Porch With Purple, Orange & Black Lights

Does your front porch have wall sconces or overhead lights? If so consider swapping out the bulbs for purple, orange, red, green or black light bulbs for a spooky Halloween effect.

Another fun lighting option for your front porch is to use orange, purple and green string lights. These lights can be wrapped around columns or railings, placed on shrubs in front of your porch, etc.

But if you’re going to display fall flowers and greenery on your front porch, you can easily transition the look into Halloween by adding in jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, skeletons and other Halloween decorations.

Some people like to do this using tables or stands to creatively display the candy and make it easy to grab.

Creepy crawly critters like spiders are one of my favorite Halloween front porch decoration ideas.

Large spiders crawling up the front of your house are a good way to decor for Halloween and can be fairly easy to setup. It looks like the spiders in the photo above are just mounted with some string to the columns near the door.

Add a few planters with jack-o-lanterns, mums, crows and other small Halloween props to frame the door for simple, DIY Halloween front porch ideas.

Along with spiders come their creepy cobwebs. Fake cobwebs have been on the market for years now and are fairly simple to setup. String them over porch railings, bushes, pumpkins and other Halloween decorations for a creepy look.

I love in the porch above, a few Halloween props like faux tombstones and a wrapped mummy are added to the fall decorations on the steps. Cobwebs are thrown over everything to finish off the Halloween look. An easy transition from fall porch decorations to a Halloween scene.

A front porch is a great place to display Halloween signs. A lot of people like to do signs that say something like “Welcome” or “Trick or Treat” as a way to welcome guests to their house for Halloween. These signs look nice displayed by the door or somewhere prominent so they are easy to read.

You can also find small but cute Halloween signs that will look great displayed along the steps leading up to your house. In the photo above, a “pick your poison” sign is grouped with fun jack-o-lanterns on the porch steps.

Shelves On A Halloween Front Porch

Does your porch have space for a shelf? If so, consider displaying a shelf decorated for Halloween on your porch. The photo above shows a simple wooden shelf covered with fall and Halloween decorations in the corner of a front porch.

You shelf doesn’t have to be that tall though. Consider making a shelf for holiday decor displays on your front porch using a few wooden crates stacked on top of each other. This is a great way to give your decor some added height.

Halloween Door Covers & Wreaths for Front Porches

Display a spooky or fun Halloween scene on your door with a door cover. If you’ve never seen door covers, they are usually made of stretchy materials or flag type materials and are designed to be displayed against a front door.

They are perfect for when you don’t have a lot of time to decorate but still want to be festive for a Halloween party or for trick or treaters. You’ll also find door covers for garage doors and banners that can be displayed on either side of a front door.

Another idea for front doors is to decorate them with a Halloween wreath. Halloween wreaths can be chic and elegant or fun and whimsical. Pick a style that works best for your front door this year.

Large Halloween Decor For Front Porches

Extra large and tall Halloween decorations are still in style and can be incorporated into your front porch decor.

Now you might not be able to fit a giant skeleton under your porch awning. But I like how in the photo above, the giant skeleton has been propped near a tree as is part of the front door “scene”. Hard to miss!
