When decorating this space, I like to start with the mantel and work my way down. On the mantel, farmhouse style Halloween signs can be placed towards the back and layered with other decorative objects such as lanterns, candles & figurines.

One way around this is to turn the book covers against the wall, similar to what is shown in the photo above. This way, only the pages are showing which are generally shades of white or beige.
