Corner Fireplace Decorating
Corner fireplaces usually fall into one of two different styles:
- The corner fireplace is set against a chimney breast wall that goes all the way to the ceiling.
- The corner fireplace has a mantel shelf that takes up the whole corner.
If your corner fireplace is against a flat wall, then you can decorate it as you would a normal fireplace. You’ll want to pay attention to the furniture layout of the room though.
But if your corner fireplace contains a mantel shelf, or is in an awkward corner of the room, that when things can get a little bit tricky. To overcome these obstacles, you’ll want to do the following:
- Consider adding a chimney breast wall above the mantel to give the corner fireplace a flat wall surface. This will allow you to decorate against this flat surface, instead of the corner.
- Fill up the corner space vertically with plants, artwork, vases, etc.
- Fill out the corner space horizontally with accent chairs, lamps, lanterns, etc.
The goal is to make your corner fireplace look like it blends in with the decor and layout of the room, instead of sticking out like a sore thumb! Keep reading to learn a few ways to do this.
Logs In A Corner Fireplace
Logs make for a nice way to decorate a corner fireplace as there are a couple different ways to use them.
You can place them on the sides of the fireplace hearth in decorative log holders. If your corner fireplace is non functional, stacking logs inside of it is a creative way to decorate the space. You can buy sets of decorative logs to use for this purpose.

Corner Fireplace Decor Ideas With Mirrors
Mirrors are a classic decoration for any fireplace. But can you use them even with a corner fireplace?
Depending on your setup, mirrors can still work with a corner fireplace. Here’s how:
- If your corner fireplace has a flat chimney breast wall (like the one shown in the photo above), simply mount or lean your mirror against this surface.
- If your corner fireplace has a mantel shelf with two walls, lean your mirror against the two walls. This helps create a nice focal point on the mantel and covers the corner. See how to do it here.
- If your corner fireplace has a mantel shelf with two walls, you can use two smaller mirrors leaning against each wall. To finish the look, you’ll want something in the middle of the mantel such as a large plant, vase, etc. See how to do it here.
- Have an empty corner fireplace? Use a mirror inside the fireplace for an interesting look. Check out this article for more ideas on how to style an empty fireplace: 16 Empty Fireplace Decorating Ideas for an Attractive Look

Artwork & Pictures For Corner Fireplaces
Similar to mirrors, large photos and artwork can be used to decorate your corner fireplace. The styling ideas are the same. If you have a flat chimney breast wall, then just hang or lean your artwork against it.
If your corner fireplace has a mantel shelf, then you can either rest the artwork against both walls so that it faces outward into the space. Or you can use smaller pieces of art/photos on each wall. This will need to be offset by one or more larger decorative items in the middle of the mantel.
You can also layer the artwork too for an interesting focal point. This is a great technique to use for corner fireplaces that aren’t symmetric. See how to do this here.
Finally, you can use artwork to decorate corner fireplace built ins. Check out my article on how to do this: 11 Simple Fireplace Built-In Decorating Ideas You Need To Try
Built In Shelves For A Corner Fireplace
Lots of fireplaces have built in bookcases or shelves on either side. This shelving is not only a good place to store things, but can be used to decorate a room as well.
Have you ever considered placing built in shelving on either side of your corner fireplace? If you have the space for it, shelves one or both sides of a corner fireplace can help bring symmetry this area. The shelves will also help create a more streamlined focal point for the room.
If the shelves are lower, like the ones shown in the photo above, they can also be used for seating. Use some cushions and pillows to create a cozy space to sit next to the fireplace.
Candles In a Corner Fireplace
I love using candles around my home to decorate with. They give off a warm glow in the evening hours and are very calming to look at.
Can you use candles for a corner fireplace? Absolutely. Candles will work well inside an empty corner fireplace such as a the one shown in the photo above.
They also work great for decorating a corner fireplace mantel shelf or placed in lanterns set along the hearth.
Flameless Pillar Candle Sets
If you don’t like the idea of using real wax candles for your corner fireplace, consider using flameless candles instead. This is a safer option for children and pets.

Plants For Corner Fireplace Decor
Plants work well for corner fireplace decorating. They can take up a lot of vertical space both on the mantel or on the hearth.
If you have plants that like to spread out with tendrils and vines, a corner fireplace mantel offers a nice place for the vines to hang down over the edges.
Now if your corner fireplace is in a dark corner of the room that doesn’t get much sunlight, consider using faux plants to decorate with instead. Faux plants come in a wide variety of sizes so you’re sure to find something that will work for your space.

Modern Corner Fireplace With TV Above
If you’re looking to update your living room with a fireplace, why not build one in a corner of the room? This is a popular DIY project that is easy to do if you’re handy.
You’ll need an electric fireplace insert and materials such as shiplap, stone or brick to use for the fireplace chimney breast. This is the part of the wall that contains the fireplace insert.
Electric Fireplace Inserts
By building a corner fireplace in this fashion, you can use the space to mount a TV above the fireplace. Now I know a lot of people will tell you not to mount a TV above a fireplace.
But in this case, it might make sense, given that you can control the height of both the TV and the fireplace insert. You can also buy special TV mounts to use for a fireplace that will allow the TV to be moved lower when you are watching it.

Lighting For a Corner Fireplace
Lighting is so important when decorate a space. Often times, corner fireplaces are in a dark part of the room, giving them a bit of a “black hole” feeling.
The solution to this is to use lighting on and around your corner fireplace. If you have a mantel above the fireplace, consider placing lamps on it for a bit of light. The lamps can be battery powered. Or maybe your mantel contains an electrical outlet – some do!

Additional corner fireplace lighting ideas include using floor lamps on either side of the hearth or using recessed lighting in the ceiling to give the area a glow.
Wall Sculptures & Busts For Corner Fireplace Decorating
One of my favorite corner fireplace decor ideas is to use wall mounted sculptures or busts to decorate this space. If you’ve got a rustic or county themed room, the chimney breast wall of a corner fireplace is a great place to show a mounted deer or elk bust.
If your space is a little more modern looking, consider using a metal or ceramic wall mounted sculpture instead. Many of these look like faux deer or lions, but you can also find sculptures like angel wings, unicorns, birds & more.

Pillows & Rugs For Corner Fireplace Decorating
One of the good things about a corner fireplace is that it’s often out of the way, tucked into a corner of the space. Because of this, you can often turn a corner fireplace into a cozy reading nook.
I mentioned before that if you have adequate built in shelves around your fireplace, a few cushions and pillows can turn them into a sitting area. You can also accomplish this by placing comfy pillows and rugs on the floor in front a fireplace.
Decorative Pillows
This makes for a fun place to relax, especially for kids and pets. If sitting on the floor doesn’t appeal to you, see if you have enough space to add a small armchair next to your corner fireplace.
Wreaths On A Corner Fireplace
I love using wreaths to decorate around the house. There are so many uses for them and you can swap them out as the seasons and holidays change throughout the year.
Have you ever considered using a wreath for corner fireplace decorating? There are a couple ways to do this. If your corner fireplace has a flat chimney breast (like the one shown in the photo above), then a wreath can be hung from it, same as you would with hanging a wreath from a regular wall.

You can also use a wreath and wreath stand to decorate on the side of your hearth.
Lanterns & Vases Around the Hearth
Lanterns are a classic way to decorate a fireplace hearth. If your corner fireplace has a defined hearth area, then consider using lanterns to decorate it.
You can find lanterns in all different shapes, sizes and colors. I like to use flameless candles in them to get a nice glow in the evening hours.
