Outdoor Fireplace Ideas
When the weather is nice, I try to get outside as much as possible to enjoy the fresh air and sounds of nature. To do this frequently though, it helps to have a comfortable outdoor place to sit and relax.
For me, that’s by my outdoor fireplace. There’s something peaceful about the watching the flames dance around in the outdoor hearth in the evenings.
If you’re looking to create the same vibe in your space, you’ll want to see these outdoor fireplace ideas for some inspiration!
Or maybe you already have an outdoor fireplace but don’t use it as often as you’d like? Keep reading to discover some ways to make the most out of your outdoor fireplace area.
Outdoor Covered Patio With Fireplace
One way to make the most out of your outdoor fireplace is to have it under a covered patio. This creates an extra room basically that can be enjoyed even when it’s lightly raining.
Because the patio is covered, you can get away with more comfortable seating and decorative accents versus an outdoor fireplace that is out in the open.
This is also a good option for people that already have a patio area directly off of their home. Consider building a roof over the patio and installing an outdoor fireplace as part of the process.
Outdoor Kitchen With Fireplace
Do you like to cook in an outdoor kitchen? Having a kitchen outside is a great option for those that live in areas with warmer weather for most of the year. It helps get you outside and enjoying nature while you create a nice meal.
If you have an outdoor kitchen or you are thinking about building one, consider incorporating a fireplace into the space. This can be done as part of the kitchen layout as shown in the photo above. Or you can do a standalone fireplace near your outdoor kitchen area.
Outdoor Pavilion With Fireplace
If you have a standalone pavilion or pool cabana in your backyard, why not add an outdoor fireplace to the space?
If you don’t want the expense of building a chimney, consider installing an electric or gas powered fireplace with some decorative stone or brick for a surround.
This is a nice way to enjoy your pavilion in the evening hours and even during the colder months. In the photo above, outdoor space heaters are used in the pavilion for extra warmth at night.
Outdoor Fireplace With TV
If you’re planning on watching some TV in the evening, why not do it near an outdoor fireplace? This is certainly a way to make more use of the space and enjoy time outside. You can also use the TV to play video games outdoors.
Outdoor TVs work best here since water doesn’t play nicely with regular TVs. You can mount your TV above the fireplace such as what’s shown in the photo above. Or have it near the fireplace for better viewing.

Outdoor Patio With Fireplace
For outdoor patio ideas with fireplace in your space, consider adding an outdoor fireplace off to one side of the patio. These patio fireplaces are often made of brick and stone and can have a very “old money” stone mansion kind of vibe.
I like how patio fireplaces can really make a patio feel like an outdoor room by providing a focal point for the space. Add seating near them such as what was done in the photo above with a table and chairs. A few sofas or benches would also work well for a fireplace seating area on a patio.
Outdoor Fireplace With Pergola
Do you have a pergola in your backyard? If so, consider adding a fireplace to the area for a nice glow at night. In the photo above, a small stone fireplace sits on the edge of a pergola covered patio. Wicker furniture is used to create a nice outdoor seating arrangement.
Pergolas are one of those features that help to give a patio more of an outdoor room kind of feel because they create a sense of “walls” within the space. Just be careful with wood pergolas and real fireplaces!
Outdoor Corner Fireplace
Many people have a corner fireplace inside their home (and are frustrated with how to decorate it! See some tips here: 9 Vibrant Corner Fireplace Decorating Ideas For This Unique Space)
But corner fireplaces can also be used outside too. In fact, what might seem like a burden inside of your home can be a fun setup on a patio space. I think this is because patios feel more open.
Seating arrangements for outdoor corner fireplaces are fairly simple – add some chairs or a loveseat in front of it for a cozy outdoor space.
Outdoor Garden Fireplace
Do you have a place in your garden where you can sit and relax? If so, it might be the perfect spot for a small outdoor fireplace.
Many people think of building water features or using statues for garden decorations. But I think outdoor fireplaces make for nice garden decor as well. This is a great idea if your garden is along a border or wall such as what’s shown in the photo above.
Modern Outdoor Fireplace
You might think of outdoor fireplaces as being mostly brick or stone. But more modern designs exist as well.
In the photo above, a modern fireplace creates a focal point along a hedge wall in this stylish garden. Something like this is similar to a garden statue and makes for a nice focal point in the space.
Outdoor Fireplace Decor
Can you style your outdoor fireplace in the same way you do an indoor fireplace? Yes, I think so, especially if you’re in a climate that doesn’t get a lot of rain.
In the Spanish style fireplace shown in the photo above, beautiful vases are used to decorate the mantel. A stylish fireplace grate along with planters on either side of the fireplace contribute to the look. The colors are repeated with the patio furniture, creating a cohesive outdoor space.
Outdoor Fireplace Mantel Decorations
One of my favorite simple outdoor fireplace ideas is to get creative with mantel decorations for covered outdoor fireplaces since they aren’t as prone to facing the elements.
I love using lanterns to style a fireplace mantel, similar to what is shown in the photo above. Smaller decorative objects such as a birdhouse and moss balls were used to enhance the area.
Decorative objects like this help give your patio more of an “outdoor room” kind of feel.
Outdoor Fireplace Wall
Can you place an outdoor fireplace against a wall of your home? Yes, just make sure to be safe about it.
You might not have much room on your patio for a free standing fireplace. But if you can find a single wall that is long enough, you might be able to build out a patio fireplace such as what’s shown in the photo above.
Gas or electric fireplace inserts work well here and can be place in a DIY stone fireplace surround. What a nice additional to a small patio!
Brick Outdoor Fireplace
A lot of people think of brick fireplaces as being the classic red or white shades. But you can make brick fireplaces look much more modern too.
I love the modern fireplace design in the photo shown above. The mantel overhang provides a unique storage area for wood logs. Grey brick is used for a streamlined, contemporary feel.
Stone Outdoor Fireplace
For those that do like the look of traditional stone fireplaces, consider building one on your patio. It doesn’t have to be very large to create a nice effect.
This is one of those home additions that is sure to increase the value of your house, especially if you include the fireplace as part of an outdoor dining area. The patio shown in the photo above creates a nice outdoor room using stone for the fireplace and outdoor kitchen.
